Back to the Root: Dancing Ancestral Cosmologies

October 23, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

$15 – $115
BTR: Dancing Ancestral Cosmologies culminates a year-long process of embodied discourse and shared research regarding the pelvis and spine.

Back to the Root: Dancing Ancestral Cosmologies will share how the cosmologies, philosophies and rituals of these sacred and secular African rooted dances intersect with very little variance; How the members of these nations manifest these belief systems and rituals in the dancing of the spine and pelvis; Engaging the past, present and future by activating the pelvis (poly-temporal), ritual (counterclockwise) and secular (clockwise) wining/rotation of the pelvis, rejuvenation of the exhausted body via activation of the spine and that relation to trance, possession, spiritual connectedness.

Panel: Cultural specialists will share the common movement languages and rituals they have come to understand through embodied practice and research of the use of the spine and pelvis.

Classes/Workshops: Cultural specialists will facilitate the deepening of the embodied experience by collaborating to select movements from the dance they plan to teach that seamlessly segue from one class into the next, so each class feels like the continuation of the one before and prepares them for the next because the movements, rituals and intentions are interconnected across the dance traditions offered. This format will aid in the durational dance structure prevalent in these forms.

$115 – Full Event (Panel + 8 classes)
