FreeGravity Pop-Up Performance #4 — Re:Naissance with Styles Alexander and jose e. abad
Amidst the rolling thunder call to prioritize Black lives, arts and voices in this divisive time of limited engagement, performance artist Gabriel Christian curates “RE:” – four public performances by Afro-Diasporic artists in San Francisco through Jess Curtis/Gravity’s Pop-Up Performance Project.
The final artists presenting are Styles Alexander and jose e. abad.

About the performance:
“If time doesn’t exist
If time heals all wounds
When should I stop waiting?
I’ve licked my gashes to the marrow
“If time doesn’t exist
If time heals all wounds
When should I stop waiting?
I’ve licked my gashes to the marrow
Plucked from the land
And buried in darkness
The seeds did not know
What they would grow to become.
And buried in darkness
The seeds did not know
What they would grow to become.
Find a way to stitch me back in.
Or at least place me haphazardly in the cracks of your side.
Or at least place me haphazardly in the cracks of your side.
No words yet to describe the newness of our being
My neck aches
My neck aches
Oh mountain
Hear me as i bring myself
Before you
Seemingly infinite, vibrating throughout
Hear me as i bring myself
Before you
Seemingly infinite, vibrating throughout
I find myself simultaneously as
Inconsequential and soft
And fragile, to touch
As if chiseled and filed down
To make something less solid
To feel yourself move through error
Inconsequential and soft
And fragile, to touch
As if chiseled and filed down
To make something less solid
To feel yourself move through error
We find power in naming ourselves as we blossom.”
Styles Alexander graduated from the Boston Conservatory in 2016, where they received their B.F.A in Choreography and Contemporary Performance. While at the Boston Conservatory Styles performed works by Camille A. Brown, Andrea Miller, Dwight Rhoden, Twyla Tharp, Idan Sharabi and many others. Styles also had the honor of choreographing two evening-length works(Daddy issues: A Reflection & Animism) on the Boston Conservatory main stage. Currently, Styles is a collaborator and performer with Kristin Damrow Dance and Fullstop Dance company, as well as a freelance choreographer.
jose e. abad is a performance artist based in Ramaytush Ohlone Territory. Through somatic experimentation, dance, and storytelling, their work unearths lost histories, memories, and wisdom held within the body that the mind has forgotten or dominant culture has erased. Their praxis centers collaborative processes of becoming and re-membering, ushering a metamorphosis through the creation of work that emerges by listening to the most intelligent technologies that exist on this plane – our bodies, ancestral wisdom, and nature.
