Epiphany Dance Theater & Urban Jazz Dance Company: Native Land, Native Hands

May 7, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

Epiphany Dance Theater announces the world premiere performances of Native Land, Native Hands, a major site specific work exploring the historic oppression and racial injustice toward Bay Area Deaf communities and communities of color.  Native Land, Native Hands is a response to several works by celebrated Bay Area Deaf sculptor Douglas Tilden (1860-1935), which in different ways have become symbolic of the marginalization and relocation of Deaf and BIPOC people in the East Bay and San Francisco.

The performance will feature American Sign Language-choreography, other forms of dance, text, and original music and will be performed by a cast of eight Deaf and hearing performers.  Native Land, Native Hands is written and choreographed by African, Indigenous, Deaf, Disabled, Two Spirited lead artist Antoine Hunter, Artistic Director of Urban Jazz Dance Company, with Dramaturgy by Kim Epifano and is produced by Epiphany Dance Theater with Urban Jazz Dance Company.

Native Land, Native Hands features Deaf actor Jac Cook and Deaf performer and Indigenous community Activist Sarah Young Bear-Brown, with music composed by Radha Metha and costumes designed by Jhia Jackson.
The Urban Jazz Dance Company performers are Kelly Garrett, Marissa Head, Cynthia Rodriguez, Danielle Silk, Zahna Simon, Piper Thomasson, Korea Venters, and Geraldine Wong.

Native Land, Native Hands will be performed at four sculptures by Tilden. Each component will be designed for viewing as either a stand-alone performance or part of a trilogy.
