Re-Visioning: a Conversation on Arts and the Environment

July 18, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Time rushes on, in ways that humans have never before contemplated. That famous picture of the earth from outer space that Apollo beamed back in the late 1960s — already that’s not the world we inhabit; its poles are melting, its oceans rising. We can register what is happening with satellites and scientific instruments, but can we register it in our imaginations, the most sensitive of all our devices?” – Bill McKibben for Grist

And to imagine other forms of human existence is exactly the challenge that is posed by the climate crisis: for if there is one thing that global warming has made perfectly clear it is that to think about the world only as it is amounts to a formula for collective suicide. We need, rather, to envision what it might be.”– Amitav Ghosh, The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable

Moving forward in the era of climate change requires new ways of listening, imagining, and being. In working at the intersection of many modes of knowing, artists embody a unique agility and responsiveness to a changing world. This conversation will explore how each of the guest speakers’ artistic practices are informed by, activate and integrate materials and lessons from the natural world, and where they believe artists might fit in the environmental movement.

This panel discussion will feature a conversation with dancer/writer Audrey Johnson, percussionist Andy Meyerson (The Living Earth Show & COMMANDO), and performance artist and painter Ana Teresa Fernández on the intersection of the performing arts and environment. ODC/Dance Company Dancer and Sustainability Ambassador Cora Cliburn will moderate the discussion and Artist in Residence KT Nelson will provide a welcome to the event.

Before and after the panel discussion, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the found-object jewelry and sculptural work of ODC/Dance artists Jaime Garcia Castilla and Brandon “Private” Freeman (Assistant to the Artistic Directors) in the ODC Theater Lobby.

This event is free to attend and will be live-streamed.
