SF International Arts Festival: Desire is a Strange Engine and Untitled

October 24, 2020 @ 5:50 pm - 6:45 pm

Two site-specific dance pieces including Desire is a Strange Engine by STEAMROLLER Dance Company that looks at rituals of gay cruising and how these spaces emanate radical queer potential.

And Dog + Pony returns to the stage with a new site-specific work that explores the impact of sheltering-in-place and social distancing. This new work will integrate dance, theatre and performance to create an improv score that is constantly evolving and shifting.

STEAMROLLER Dance Company, is a group of artists that came together in 1993 to create guerrilla performances addressing HIV/AIDS in marginalized communities. The company currently under the direction of Jesselito Bie has presented work in the 1997 Bay Area Dance Festival, the In the Street Festivals, the SF Lesbian and Gay Dance Festivals, Asian American Dance Performances, Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, Summer Performance Festival, San Francisco Trolley Dances, the DIRT Festival, the first Queering Dance Festival and the 2016-2019 SF International Arts Festivals.

Dog & Pony creates live performances that re-shape and re-contextualize dominant paradigms to offer alternative perspectives for engaged audiences. With a steadfast belief in the power of art, Dog & Pony works to increase societal equity by imagining new possibilities and creating space for productive and challenging dialogues. In Dog & Pony, Alma and Joe each create dance works that are connected by a shared, singular subject. These dances deconstruct and re-imagine literature, art, inherited assumptions, and prominent cultural archetypes. Throughout their respective creative processes, Joe and Alma consider ideology, location, and form as situated within and influenced by queer, feminist, and non-patriarchal perspectives.

San Francisco International Arts Festival is an annual event, founded in 2003 to celebrate the arts by bringing together a global community of artists and presenting innovative projects focused on increasing human understanding.

The 2020 Festival Program features over 35 art groups from the US and 7 other countries and includes performances across 6 disciplines, including Music, Dance, Theater, Comedy, Theatre, Cirque, and Performance Art
