The Varnam Salon is a series of performances by California-based senior art practitioners, mid-career artists and upcoming dancers. Artists can be nominated or apply to perform. This initiative is supported by the California Arts Council Local Impact Grant and is created and curated by Nadhi Thekkek, Shruti Abhishek, and Preethi Ramaprasad, and produced by Nava Dance Theatre.
Varnam refers to the main piece of a bharatanatyam performance. Known for its physical and expressive vigor, the varnam is often an exploration of relationships for both the performer and the audience. This salon was conceived to see bharatanatyam practitioners in their element, and to encourage the continued practice of timeless pieces in the bharatanatyam repertoire.
