Rogue Gestures/Foreign Bodies is a contemporary dance theatre and live music production that celebrates the labor and lived experiences of immigrant women in the US. The work weaves bharatanatyam, dance theatre, and raga-based music to celebrate the breadwinning, culture-bearing, determined generosity of our femme elders, insisting that the only way forward is together. These are lessons needed now more than ever!
Rogue Gestures is created and produced by Nava Dance Theatre with an ensemble cast of 6 dancers and a live original score by Roopa Mahadevan and Kalaisan Kalaichelvan.
4 South-Asian women stand in a straight line in a body of water surrounded by trees – their colorful, patterned tops bringing them into sharp focus in the landscape. They gaze out at a fixed point… in the distance, wearing looks of eager anticipation and holding weighted luggage on their bodies. They seem to be arriving in a new land, waiting expectantly for what comes next.
