inkBoat_95Rituals-high resOn Friday, May 1, the Rotunda Dance Series continues its 5th season with a performance entitled Ritual 4-6: ascent, by Oakland-based inkBoat. The free performance features duets by Dana and Shinichi Iova-Koga, choreographed by Molissa Fenley and Wanjiru Kumuyu with live music by Suki O’Kane, Jason Ditzian, Max Baloian, Tim Kim, Katherine McDonald and Dan Gottwald.

This special event is part of a larger performance project, 95 Rituals, directed by inkBoat’s Shinichi Iova-Koga and honoring the work of legendary choreographer Anna Halprin, in celebration of her 95th birthday. 95 Rituals is a series of free site-specific performances made with guest musicians and artists from around the world. Performances continue through mid-July in various locations in San Francisco. For the full schedule and more details visit 95rituals.org.

The performance by inkBoat at the Rotunda is a part of Bay Area Dance Week, a 10-day festival of over 500 free classes, workshops, performances, open rehearsals and more. Presented annually by Dancers’ Group, the 2015 Bay Area Dance Week (bayareadance.org) runs from April 24 through May 3. More than 20,000 people are anticipated to participate in the festival this year.

Founded by Shinichi Iova-Koga in 1998, inkBoat is a physical theatre & dance company built by and with the collaborative efforts of choreographers, musicians, dancers, actors, visual artists and directors. The company concerns itself with everyday reality and invisible influence, cultivating mystery within human experience, merging tradition and experimentalism. inkBoat has been recognized numerous times by the Isadora Duncan Awards Committee, receiving 12 nominations and 4 Izzie awards: “Outstanding Achievement in Company Performance” for the 2008 production of c(H)ord, “Outstanding Achievement in Visual Design” for the 2011 performance Line Between, “Outstanding Achievement in Company Performance” for 2004’s Ame to Ame, “Outstanding Achievement in Visual Design” for 2003’s Heavens’ Radio.
