First Voice: Soul of the City

Join us for a performance & live filming of Brenda Wong Aoki’s newest work. Soul of the City is a ritual performance exploring San Francisco, the cradle of Asia America. It centers on a storyteller devoid of tales, who feels lost without her purpose. Carrying a jade bracelet, Japanese fan, wooden music box, and Native American necklace, she seeks the city’s soul amidst ghosts and urban legends. This journey is depicted through traditional Japanese theater, modern spoken word, and Asian American Jazz, uncovering the divine within us all.

Created by Brenda Wong Aoki, with poetry by devorah major and music by Mark Izu & Mas Koga, the show features artists Shoko Hikage, Jimi Nakagawa, Kenneth Nash, and Sara Sithi-Amnuai. It includes costumes by Lydia Tanji and multimedia by Olivia Ting, Andi Wong, and Mark Shigenaga, choreographed by Claudine Naganuma with dancers Raychel Hatch and Ki’ Shae Qetlah.
