Ishami Dance Company: Pehchaan
The dancers visualize the ideas of stories coming to life as the seated dancer "writes" in a diary.
Pehchaan (Identity) is a dance production exploring some of the unique identities experienced by South Asians of the Diaspora. By engaging with the stories of the community, including immigrant and diasporic perspectives, they examine their roots, origins, culture, gender, sexuality, and dreams, to express what constitutes hyphenated identities.
Ishami Dance Company dreams of what a world that embraces them wholly could look like, while simultaneously articulating the realities of their lived experiences. “How do we find a sense of belonging? How can identities that seem conflicting not only co-exist but harmonize? How can we find ways to celebrate our culture while critically engaging with the aspects of it that reinforce hierarchy, division, and hatred?”
With Indian Contemporary Dance movement and music from South Asian folk traditions, indie artists and even Bollywood, they strive to delve into the layers of what it means to be themselves. Pehchaan is performed by Ishami Dance Company and features music artist Annette Philip.
