Jhia Jackson: rose water sundaze

June 23, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)
$5 – $20

Chris, a Black male with cedar tone skin and black ink tattoos, smooshes their face with one hand and holds the space near their temple with the other while soft, aging, white rose petals flutter and fall around them

What does it take to be held and to hold?

Drawing from Jhia Jackson’s years long sundays are for the water weekly ritual self-actualization practice, rose water sundaze is an exploration of world building for being. Grieving, loving, resting, sensing, moving…the luxury of being. This interdisciplinary, asynchronous work is an intentional practice of noticing, building, and holding space for being through the use of dance, film, sound, writing, and everyday life practices.

rose water sundaze invites audiences to choose their energetic contributions to the space through an email based stimulations practice running from June 21 – June 28 and two collective space cycles at Joe Goode Annex on June 23 and June 25. The stimulations are daily email prompts drawn from the generative process of the work that foster opportunities for embodied, active self-reflection in daily life and will elaborate on ways to contribute to the collective space cycles in person or from a distance. The two collective space cycle events will each run for two hours, at which time you are invited to enter and exit when you’d like, show up as you are, actively participate in the offerings as much as you’d like, or rest, witness, and generally hold space. There will be video, sound, live space activators, plants, and more. Some seats, pillows, and blankets will be provided – you are also invited to bring your own or wander about the space.

This experiment is led by Jhia Jackson and developed with the personal and artistic contributions of Patrick Perkins (film), Eric Brooks (soundscape), Chris Scarver (mover), Elizabeth Mulkey (mover), Shaunnah Ray (mover), Jes Deville (mover), and Noah D. James III (mover & writer).

Special thanks to Joe Goode Annex for co-producing the work, Little Boxes Theater for providing filming space, and PUSH Dance Company for awarding Jhia the P4C relief fund which she used to support her sundays are for the water practice.

There is power in the space we choose to make and take.
