MoToR/dance: Water in the Kettle

February 3 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)
$15 – $40

Women dressed in white dancing

Water in the Kettle uses Artistic Director Evie Ladin’s body music choreography (harmony singing, body percussion, rhythm dance) to illuminate the maddeningly recurrent struggles of modern women and the country, with intention, humor, and connective rhythm. We put water on to boil when we organize, commiserate, work, celebrate, refuel. The multigenerational ensemble—women raised by feminist mothers, still fighting the same fights—harmonizes over polyrhythmic body music singing, “I just might soak it up and some.”

Layering rhythmic systems in hands, feet, and body, adding three+part harmonies, MoToR/dance illustrates a collective consciousness, a precision requiring performers to listen intently to each other. From self-directed hum to blaring sarcasm, MoToR/dance tells choreographed stories with emotional impact.

MoToR/dance is also thrilled to share an online film version of the work that can be viewed from home. Water in the Kettle was created for intimate live performance, but Dean Bosche/Outdoor Film has edited a striking version from the world premiere at Rhythmix in 2023 so that more audiences outside the San Francisco Bay Area can have access to the work. The online film version is available for $25 online here. For the best viewing experience, MoToR/dance suggests audiences immerse themselves in the hour-long show in one sitting, ideally on a large screen.
