Pachuquísmo at MACLA!

June 11, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

$10 – $35

Join Vanessa Sanchez and La Mezcla for a special outdoor performance of Pachuquísmo and a screening of their new dance film “Ghostly Labor”!

Pre-show and doors @ 7pm.

“Ghostly Labor: A Dance Film” explores the history of labor in the US–Mexico borderlands through Tap Dance, Mexican Zapateado, Son Jarocho, Afro Caribbean movement, and live music. This work brings together polyrhythmic movement and an original score to look at the (ongoing) years of systemic exploitation of labor while highlighting the power and joy of collective resistance. Co-Directed by John Jota Leaños & Vanessa Sanchez.

Pachuquísmo is a multi-disciplinary, rhythmic performance presented by Vanessa Sanchez and La Mezcla that unveils a forgotten history of Mexican-American female youth and explores the struggles that communities of color continue to face today. The work overlays tap dance with Mexican zapateado, features a live band that brings together Jazz with traditional Son Jarocho music from Veracruz, Mexico and explores the Chicanx experience through percussive conversations. With the 9-person, all-female cast donning full zoot suits, Pachuquísmo pulls the narrative of the Zoot Suit Riots out of the male-centered context and portrays the experiences of las pachucas of the 1940’s through movement, spoken word and video.
