Dancing in the Museum
CounterPULSE and Dancers’ Group co-presented a panel of distinguished curators, executives, artists and thinkers who discussed what happens when dance comes alive in territory built for the visual arts.
Panelists addressed a moment in which more public programs and performances are taking place within museum and gallery walls and the current priorities for presenting dance in this architecture. Speakers considered ways movement can function in a space designed for another kind of art and a different mode of looking. They also looked to address a larger community question. How do governing bodies of museums and galleries select dance to activate their spaces, and how does dance change when its context comes artistically charged with a particular point of view?
Comprising the panel were Monique Jenkinson (Fauxnique), 2012 de Young artist fellow; Frank Smigiel, associate curator of public programs at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Muriel Maffre, executive director of the Museum of Performance and Design and lecturer in dance at Stanford University; and Michelle Lynch, curator of Meridian Dance, the performance and dance series at Meridian Gallery.
Guest curators for The Dance Discourse Project #13 invited the public to participate in an online discussion fueled by numerous artists, scholars, administrators and more, who will contribute perspective pieces on the topic in advance of the event.
